The McGowan Government is committed to implementing a CDS from early 2020. The CDS will reduce litter, increase recycling, protect the environment and help engage the community in active and positive recycling behaviours.

A consultation regulation impact statement for the CDS is open for a four-week comment period from 13 August until 10 September 2018.

The consultation regulation impact statement provides a preliminary assessment of the costs and benefits of the container deposit scheme. It focuses on the Western Australian Government’s preferred option of developing a CDS that aligns closely with the schemes introduced in other Australian jurisdictions. This option also minimises the costs to the beverage industry and avoids confusion for both industry and consumers.

Following the close of the consultation period, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation will analyse submissions, make recommendations to the Minister for Environment and prepare a decision regulation impact statement.
